By FunAcrylic Team · The Artisan Process
Have you ever wondered why our hand carved wooden birds feel so smooth and warm in your hand? It's because they aren't made by machines. Below is the rigorous 10-step artisan process we go through for every single bird in your kit—so you can skip the hard work and jump straight to the joy of creation.
There is something profoundly healing about the texture of 'carved wooden birds'. Many of us remember the tradition of the "Comfort Bird"—a simple wood piece carved to fit the palm, washing away anxiety.
At FunAcrylic, we believe in that healing power. But we also know that carving from scratch is dangerous, messy, and difficult. It requires sharp knives, thumb guards, and hours of patience.
That is why we do the carving 'for' you. We prepare the perfect canvas so you can focus on the relaxing art of painting.
Want to see how much work goes into just one bird? Here is the visual, step-by-step journey of your "Nature Bird".

The Supplies (What Our Artisans Use)
To create a single bird, our local artisans use a specialized toolkit. If you were to do this at home, you would need:
- 🪵 Premium Basswood (Linden): The only wood soft enough to carve but hard enough to hold detail.
- 🔪 Whittling Knife: A fixed-blade knife for heavy material removal.
- 🔪 Detail Knife: A smaller blade for the beak and eyes.
- 🛡️ Safety Gear: Cut-resistant gloves and thumb guards.
Step 1: The "Grain Check"
Before a single cut is made, the artisan must read the wood. Wood has a "grain"—a direction in which the fibers grow. Carving 'against' the grain causes splitting and ruining the piece.
We select blocks of "Linden wood"that have straight, consistent grain. This ensures that your final "carved wooden bird" won't crack over time.
Selecting the perfect block of Basswood with straight grain.Step 2: Transferring the Pattern
We don't just guess the shape. We use a template to draw the side profile of the bird onto the wood block. The tail must be aligned with the grain for strength.
Using a template to trace the outline onto the raw wood.Step 3: The "Roughout"
This is the most physically demanding part. Using a large whittling knife, the artisan cuts away the corners of the square block. The floor of our workshop is covered in large wood chips during this phase.
The goal here isn't to make it look like a bird yet—it's just to remove the bulk material to reveal the rough silhouette inside.
The roughout phase: Turning a square block into a geometric shape.Step 4: Establishing the Center Line
To ensure the bird doesn't look lopsided, the artisan draws a centerline down the back and belly. Every cut on the left must match a cut on the right. This symmetry is what makes our "hand carved wooden birds" look so balanced.
A crucial step for symmetry: marking the center.Step 5: Rounding the Body
Birds don't have square edges! The artisan uses long, sweeping "push cuts" to round over the sharp corners. This is where the bird starts to come alive. The square block transforms into an organic, egg-like shape that fits perfectly in your hand.
Using push cuts to create a rounded, organic form.Step 6: Defining the Head and Tail
Now, we switch to the Detail Knife. The artisan carefully carves the "stop cut" where the head meets the body, creating the neck definition. Then, they carefully taper the wood down to a thin, elegant point for the tail.
Step 7: The Beak (The Soul of the Bird)
The beak determines the bird's expression. Tiny, precise cuts are made to shape the beak. This requires incredible hand strength and fine motor control to avoid chipping the delicate point.
Intricate detail work on the beak requires a steady hand.Step 8: Rough Sanding
Once the carving is done, the bird still has tool marks and ridges. We start with 150-grit sandpaper to remove the rough spots. The artisan must sand 'with' the grain to avoid scratches.
Removing tool marks with coarse 150-grit sandpaper.Step 9: Fine Polishing
We don't stop at "smooth enough." We move to 320-grit sandpaper to polish the wood until it feels like silk. This step is critical for your "DIY craft kit" because acrylic markers need a perfectly smooth surface to glide over without snagging.
Achieving a silky-smooth finish with 320-grit paper.Step 10: Quality Inspection
Finally, every bird is inspected under bright light. Does it stand up straight? Is the surface perfectly smooth? Only the birds that pass this rigorous check make it into your box.
